Intelligence — understanding your fishing data

Intelligence is CatchMate's pattern detection engine. It analyses every session you have logged — weather, time of day, season, venue, rod setup, and bait — and turns that data into personal recommendations for your next trip. Unlike generic fishing advice, everything shown in Intelligence is derived exclusively from your own sessions. The more you fish and log, the sharper and more accurate the insights become.

Intelligence is accessible from the main navigation (or from your customised navigation bar — see Customise the navigation bar). At the top of the screen a data strip shows your total sessions logged, total catches, and how many months of data you have built up.

How much data is needed?

Intelligence requires a baseline of completed sessions before pattern detection activates. Until that threshold is reached, a message tells you how many more sessions are needed. You can still see the Today's Fishing Plan and planning tools during this time, but the deeper pattern charts and predictions require a solid baseline to be meaningful.

Today's Fishing Plan

The first and most prominent section is Today's Fishing Plan. This is a seasonally-aware recommendation card that tells you, right now, where to go, what to use, and when to fish — based on your historical data filtered to today's conditions.

How it works

The plan cross-references your session history against the current season and month and — if you set today's conditions — narrows the data further to sessions fished in similar weather. It then surfaces the four recommendations with the strongest catch rate from that filtered set:

  • Best Venue — the water where your historical catch rate is highest under current conditions
  • Best Rod Setup — the tackle type that has produced the most catches per hour in similar sessions
  • Best Bait — the hookbait with the highest catch rate in comparable conditions
  • Peak Window — the time of day (dawn, morning, afternoon, evening, or night) when your catch rate peaks for this season and weather

Each recommendation shows a catches-per-hour figure and a confidence indicator (one to three dots) based on how much data supports it.

Setting today's conditions

You can provide the current weather in three ways:

  • My Location — tap to let the app detect your GPS position and pull live weather automatically
  • Postcode — type a postcode to pull live weather for that area
  • Venue — select one of your saved venues (if it has a postcode or map pin) to pull the weather at the water

Once detected, the weather condition and temperature are pre-filled. You can also select the weather condition manually from the chip picker (Sunny, Partly Cloudy, Overcast, Drizzle, Light Rain, Rain, Windy, Foggy) and enter a temperature in Celsius. Changing these values instantly updates the plan.

The plan header shows the current season with a colour-coded badge (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) and the total number of matching sessions the recommendations are drawn from.

Plan Your Week

The Plan Your Week section provides a 7-day fishing forecast. Each day is given a fishing conditions score:

  • Good — conditions historically produce strong results in your data
  • Fair — moderate conditions, some fish likely
  • Tough — conditions that have historically produced lower catch rates
  • Unknown — insufficient data to score

Tap any day to open a detail sheet showing that day's full weather forecast alongside personalised recommendations for venue, rod setup, bait, and peak time window — all filtered to the season and weather conditions expected on that day. The best day of the week is highlighted with a star.

Best Venues This Week

Best Venues This Week combines live 7-day weather data with your session history to rank all your saved venues for every day of the coming week.

Tap Scan my venues to trigger the scan. The app fetches the weather forecast for each venue (using the postcode or map pin you saved against it) and scores them using your historical performance data. Each day in the list shows:

  • The recommended venue for that day
  • The best time of day to fish it
  • The temperature range and wind speed
  • A Good / Fair / Tough / Unknown conditions score

Tapping a day opens a ranked list of all your venues for that day — scored from best to worst — so you can compare and decide where to go. The star badge in the section header shows the single best day of the week across all your venues.

To use this feature, your venues must have a postcode or map pin saved against them. Venues without location data cannot be included in the scan.

Today's Predictions

Today's Predictions are short, data-driven statements about what is likely to happen on the bank today, based on patterns in your history. Examples include which time of day your catch rate typically peaks, whether your catch rate tends to be higher in the current season, and how the current weather compares to conditions that have produced your best results.

Each prediction shows a confidence indicator reflecting how strongly the pattern holds across your data.

Suggestions

Suggestions are actionable tips generated from gaps or patterns in your data. High-priority suggestions appear at the top and are highlighted. Examples might include enabling bait tracking to unlock bait performance analysis, fishing a particular venue that historically performs well in the current season, or trying a different tackle type that has produced a higher catch rate than your usual choice.

Pattern Sections

Below the planning tools, Intelligence displays a set of detailed pattern charts built from your complete session history. Each section shows catch rate (catches per hour) broken down by a different variable, with a confidence indicator per row.

Weather Patterns

Shows how your catch rate varies across different weather conditions — Sunny, Partly Cloudy, Overcast, Drizzle, Light Rain, Rain, Windy, Foggy. The best-performing condition is highlighted. Each row shows total catches, number of sessions, and catches per hour, so you can see both rate and volume.

Pressure vs Catches

Shows your catch rate grouped by atmospheric pressure band (Very Low, Low, Normal, High, Very High). This helps identify whether you fish better on rising, falling, or stable pressure days. This data is collected automatically when live weather is recorded at session start.

Time of Day Patterns

Breaks your catch rate into five time windows: Dawn, Morning, Afternoon, Evening, and Night. Catch rate is calculated from total catches divided by hours actually spent on the bank during each window across all your sessions. The highest-performing window is highlighted.

Monthly & Seasonal Patterns

Shows your catch rate for every calendar month you have fished, grouped by season. Each row shows total catches, number of sessions, catches per hour, and season. This view makes it easy to spot your most productive months and how your performance shifts across the year.

Tackle Performance

Shows catch rate and average weight per catch broken down by rod setup type (Method Feeder, Pole, Float, Running Line, etc.). This helps identify which approach produces the most fish and which produces the heaviest fish — which are often different.

Bait Performance

Shows catch rate broken down by hookbait, drawn from sessions where bait tracking was enabled. Each row shows total catches, sessions fished, and catches per hour. This builds over time into a personal guide to which baits work best for you at your venues.

Confidence Indicators

Throughout Intelligence, every recommendation and pattern row shows a confidence indicator — one, two, or three filled dots:

  • One dot — based on limited data; treat as directional
  • Two dots — a reasonable pattern is emerging
  • Three dots — strong pattern backed by substantial data

Confidence increases as you log more sessions. A three-dot recommendation carries significant weight because it is drawn from many data points across varied conditions.

Tips for getting the most from Intelligence

  • Log every session, including difficult days — tough sessions where few fish are caught are as valuable as good ones, because they help identify what conditions to avoid
  • Enable weather recording at session start so pressure and condition data is captured automatically
  • Enable bait tracking and tackle profiles so those pattern sections populate fully
  • Save a postcode or map pin against every venue you fish so Best Venues This Week can include them
  • The more variety in your sessions — different venues, weather, seasons, and setups — the more distinctions Intelligence can draw and the sharper the recommendations become
