Mounting your phone on a seat box side tray
A stable side-tray phone mount keeps CatchMate close enough to check during a live Coarse session without taking over your fishing space.
A phone holder on the side tray can keep CatchMate visible and easy to tap while you fish. The aim is not to put the phone in the way of your tackle: it is to give you a stable, readable place to record the next action, then return your attention to the water.
This guide is for clamp, gooseneck, or flexible-arm holders that fit your own seat box and phone. Check the holder, tray, and phone together before relying on the setup beside the water.
The photos are examples of one real setup, not a claim of universal compatibility or a guarantee of safety on every venue or seat box.
A wide view of a real seat-box and side-tray arrangement. Position your own holder so the phone stays out of splash and fishing paths.
Choose the mounting point
Before attaching anything, sit at the box as you would while fishing and look for an edge that is:
- rigid and supported by the tray frame or a compatible support rail, rather than the mesh, a thin unsupported lip, or a hinged part;
- wide and thick enough for the clamp jaws to close fully, within the holder’s stated adjustment range;
- clear of drawers, bait tubs, hinges, tray latches, legs, and any part that has to fold or slide;
- on the side that leaves your casting path, landing area, and rod rests unobstructed.
The best edge is usually close enough for a short reach but not so close that an elbow, clothing, net handle, or bait tub can strike the phone. If the tray flexes when you press it lightly, choose a more supported edge or do not use that position.
Attach the holder
- Put the phone aside and open the clamp enough to pass over the chosen edge. If the holder has rubber or padded contact faces, keep them clean and in place.
- Seat both jaws squarely on the chosen frame or support. Do not clamp on the mesh, over a cable, on a tray lip that can deform, or across a moving joint.
- Tighten the clamp by hand until it is secure. Use only the tightening force allowed by the holder; excessive force can mark or distort a tray.
- Gently test the mount by pressing the arm in the direction it will be loaded. The clamp should stay put, the tray should not bow, and the arm should not spring into the fishing area.
- Fit the phone into the holder and check that the grip is closed around the phone or its case. Give the phone a light sideways nudge before bringing it over the water.
The close view shows the flexible arm and phone position. Check that your own clamp grips a rigid, compatible support without blocking tray fittings.
Set the arm and phone for a seated reach
Shape the flexible arm in a short, supported curve rather than a long unsupported loop. Place the phone where you can glance at it and tap it with one hand while seated, without leaning across the tray.
Use a shallow viewing angle that avoids glare. Keep the screen high enough to read, but below eye level and outside the path of a rod, feeder, pole, landing net, or bait arm. The phone should not extend beyond the outer edge where a sleeve or equipment can catch it.
Use CatchMate during the session
With the phone in a stable position, you can keep the live-session controls within reach:
- Tap Cast Out when the rig reaches the water. CatchMate starts the cast timer.
- Tap Reel In when you retrieve without a fish. This records the blank cast and stops the timer.
- Tap Add Catch or a Quick Log species action when you land a fish. The active cast timer supplies the catch duration, so do not create another manual-duration cast for the same fish.
- Open the active setup or Rod Roost controls when you change rigs or move to another saved rod. Confirm the selected rod or setup before casting again.
- Add a note, bait detail, weather observation, or other session information while the phone is still in the holder. Move the phone closer or remove it from the grip before typing anything that needs more attention.
The current Coarse live-session view keeps catch logging and rod setup controls in a compact phone layout; the exact visible cards depend on your settings and session layout.
The mount is a convenience, not a reason to fish one-handed in an unsafe position. Stop casting, place the rod securely, and keep the phone away from the water before changing a rig, handling a fish, or reaching for equipment.
Selecting a holder
The linked example is a user's example of a clamp-style flexible-arm phone holder: view the example on Amazon UK. It is not required, endorsed by CatchMate, guaranteed to fit every seat box or phone, or a statement about current stock or availability. The link is provided only to illustrate the general type of holder described here. An equivalent holder may work just as well.
Before buying or using any holder, check:
- Clamp fit: its opening range and jaw depth must suit the actual thickness and shape of your tray edge.
- Arm stability: the arm should hold its shape without sagging or vibrating into the screen when you tap it.
- Phone grip: the jaws should retain your phone and case without pressing buttons or covering the screen. Check the grip again after fitting the phone.
- Viewing angle: you should be able to read and tap the screen from your seated position without twisting your body.
- Seat-box compatibility: confirm that the clamp will not obstruct the tray’s hinge, latch, drawers, legs, folding action, or the equipment you normally keep there.
Move or remove it safely
Recheck the clamp whenever you change the tray position, move the seat box, or reshape the arm. If the phone begins to wobble, the tray flexes, or the clamp creeps, stop using it and move to a better-supported edge.
When changing your setup, first remove the phone and place it somewhere dry and secure. Support the arm with one hand, loosen the clamp gradually, and lift it away without twisting the tray edge. Fold or pack the holder separately so the jaws cannot scratch other tackle. Before packing the seat box, check that the clamp, phone grip, and tray are free from bait, grit, and standing water.
Safety checklist
- Test the complete phone, holder, and tray combination before fishing over water.
- Keep the phone and clamp away from splashes, bait, unhooking water, and wet landing equipment.
- Do not overtighten or use a damaged clamp; stop if the tray shows a mark, crack, bend, or movement.
- Keep the arm and phone clear of casting, striking, landing-net, pole, feeder, and line paths.
- Never let the holder replace a secure place for the rod or fish-handling equipment.
- Remove the phone before moving, folding, or carrying the seat box.
